Price Comparison App Demoed on Xperia X10

November 20th, 2009

My friends over at the Sony Ericsson Developer World YouTube Channel posted a video where they demo a truly useful and cool app on the X10. The app is created by a Swedish price comparison site – prisjakt.se. It also integrates with another app called Barcode Scanner to create a mobile bar code scanning, price comparing super app :)

I know the developer people are interested in demoing apps on the X10 and I’m also testing new ones all the time. So if any of you have or know of cool apps that need some testing, feel free to give us your tips in the comments section!

Swedish X10 Press Event Held Yesterday

November 19th, 2009

Yesterday, we presented the Xperia X10 to Swedish press. I held a short presentation on the UX platform and the Timescape and Mediascape applications. Afterwards I did some interviews, some of which reached half way around the world. With my last name being “Skoglund:-)

Below is a quick video giving you a glimpse of the event.

Malmö to New York

November 17th, 2009

I wasn’t as lucky with the sun as Rikard, but despite the grey film glued on the sky I went out for a city walk in southern Sweden. The city of Malmö to be more specific.

Even though it is late autumn, there are still some nice colours to capture. As Rikard highlighted, these pictures have been taken with development software which is being fine-tuned as we speak.

Quite a contrast to move on NY. Just got here last night. The photographical objects are slightly different at Times Square at night :) . I am here to meet with analysts and developers together with my colleagues, so we will see to that you get some reporting on what response we get from media and developers here.

All the best//Sumit

Poll: Which app will be your first to install?

November 16th, 2009

Looking at the answers provided in the last poll, the answer seems to be simple – you are looking forward to the Xperia X10 because it rocks :) . I personally voted for the social media integration (you know I’ve seen the Timescape app, and I am beginning to really appreciate how it brings together all social media and other information streams).

We are also opening up a new poll – what kind of app will be the first you install in your Xperia X10? Go ahead and vote in the left side bar.

Xperia X10 Sample Pictures and Sample Video

November 14th, 2009

So, finally the sun has shown itself here in Stockholm, so I decided to shoot some samples some days ago over lunch. I also added some from earlier the same day when it was a bit more grey though. For those of you that know me from the Satio Launch Blog this is a post in the same style as I did with Satio samples.

There are some important things to remember though.

  • I’m not that used to X10 yet so I haven’t found all the settings and such to really optimize my shots.
  • These are not tripod-shots so camera shake could be more visible than some of the Satio samples. (I’m working on some DIY tripod mount for X10 since I can’t use our tripod accessory, I do miss that fastport some times ;-) )
  • This is of course with pre-release SW and prototype HW so don’t take these samples as true indications on what the final quality will be like, there are lots of things still to be fine-tuned and changed.

I tried to shoot a mix of different type of pics from macro to landscape and also with different levels of sunlight and shadows for you to at least get an idea of what it’s capable of already at this pre-release stage.

Happy days

November 12th, 2009

Allright, so today is the big day. I fire up my Xperia X10 and will now start to use it as my main phone. You can all see how happy I am in the picture that my colleague snapped with her Satio :) Already amazed of how smoothly my Facebook and Twitter accounts integrates into Timescape. Really look forward to give it a good try. Stay tuned for more updates shortly. I know Rikard has been giving the camera a first try in a sunny Stockholm today. cheers/MattiasThumbs up for XPERIA X10

Why do you look forward to the Xperia X10?

November 10th, 2009

I’ve posted a poll on the blog to find out what you look forward to regarding the Xperia X10. I haven’t voted myself yet, but I am leaning towards the social media integration.

Some facts about Xperia 10, Android and OpenGL

November 7th, 2009

For a marketer it feels like a privilege to deal with such passionate and expressive audience.  I am still getting warmed up, but have been prepared from the beginning that my posts might not be of complete satisfaction to the very knowledgeable group of people that we have here.  Mattias will introduce more bloggers over time that have much more deeper technical understanding of the product and the platform, so stay tuned.

I have come to learn that android as a platform has reached great stability considering its short time in the market and the wide range of chipsets that are supported. The platform is developing fast, but there are areas that are limited today, which I would expect to improve rapidly.

I understand that android today support 16 bit colour. I don´t have visibility of such capabilities improvements roadmaps, neither do I know what that would imply for Xperia X10 at this time, but will share once we get there and allow my product team to elaborate more on the topic.

Sony Ericsson with Xperia X10 introduces signature user experiences on top, requiring extensive development, which I believe is incredible to use. Rushing out an vanilla android release is one thing, adding value is something else.
The combination of Sony Ericsson core experience and embracing the open platform capabilities is what really makes this product exiting….  I went on  android market  some time ago, browsing through the free applications with my Xperia X10. Found a couple of e-compass apps, that utilises the magnetometer that do exist in the Xperia X10 hardware.

I also found apps combining compass and layered information. Really cool I have to say, even though some of the information layers were geographically restricted.  It is obvious, that me being a marketer is not giving enough depth in the reply, so I will pick up some threads when I get a chance to clarify technical issues with some help from the team.

To begin, these are the answers I have received regarding Android and Open GL compatibility for the X10.

  • X10 is running Android 1.6.
  • Android 1.6 has OpenGL ES 1.1 APIs (native and Java)
  • X10 hardware (GPU) supports OpenGL ES 2.0
  • X10 SEMC applications (such as Timescape) rely on a UI framework which is Qualcomm proprietary and indirectly use OpenGL ES 2.0 hardware and functionality.

Conclusion:
With X10 running Android 1.6, OpenGL ES 2.0 APIs are not accessible to all developers (although the HW is there).

Satio Update – Voted Best Camera Phone in Sweden

November 6th, 2009

Yesterday me and Gustaf were at the Mobilgalan (”Mobile gala”) arranged by Tidningen Mobil (A Swedish magazine covering the mobile industry and gadgets).

It was a great party and lots of cool companies were awarded for innovations and business successes in the industry.

On the Mobil.se website consumers had also voted for the best mobile phones of 2009 and I’m very happy that Satio was voted best camera phone and W995 best music phone.

Thanks to those of you who voted, it really feels great to see that so many people like their Satio!

Answers to some of your questions

November 5th, 2009

Let me introduce myself. I am Sumit Malhotra, Global marketing manager for Xperia X10.

Sumit

I am very happy about the announcement earlier this week. Using the phone outside the office walls has been somewhat of a relief and it is encouraging to get some remarks and raised eyebrows when people see me using it. The design is eye catching and stands out from normal large screen so getting great response and anticipation, but a lot of questions as well….

One of the benefits of using an open operating system is that we can tailor your phone to your specific needs. As an example, there is not a document editor preloaded, but there are and will be free and premium applications available in the application store.

Now to your questions. I haven’t been able to answer all of them at this point but have tried my best to get to as many as possible.

* Will it have multi-touch in future updates?

Xperia X10 has a capacitive screen. It does not support multi-touch functionality at launch, but is considered for the future.

* What’s a scratch-resistant screen?

Xperia X10 has mineral glass to prevent easy scratching and fingerprint coating.

* Is it based on OpenGL 1.1 or 2.0 for games and other stuff?

Xperia X10 supports Open GL 2.0.

* What is the size of the battery?

It is 1500mAh.

* How many colors does the screen support?

I noticed the confusion in the communction around this topic, but the correct number is 65,536.

* Will the X10 receive Android 2.0 update (for those who bought from the initial batches with Android 1.6) ?

The UX platform used for Xperia X10 will evolve to Android 2.0 over time.

* What would be the camera like?

We’ll try to post a tutorial video of the camera interface within short, but in short it’s quite similar to what’s seen in our earlier touch screen phones like Satio, X2, and Aino.

* When will this be available in the UK?

X10 will be available in selected markets during Q1 next year. We will get back with more details as to more exact timing and where.
